Making Things Crystal Clear

In a drug-related murder case, Jonathan Rivers pleaded guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for his promise to cooperate with authorities. But when he took the Fifth Amendment at the trial of a drug kingpin, prosecutors tried to rescind his plea agreement and sentence him for murder. In a newly issued opinion, the state Supreme Court said prosecutors couldn't do that because the plea agreement was ambiguously worded and didn't explicitly state that the man would have to testify. State prosecutors say they will now standardize their plea agreement forms.
