Thomas J. Esposito, M.D., M.P.H., FACS is currently a surgical intensivist with University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria,
Illinois and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria. He formerly was Medical Director of
the Wound Care Center at Unity Point Health in Peoria and prior to that was a Professor and Director of the Division of Trauma,
Surgical Critical Care and Burns in the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL for over 20
years. While there, he served as the Director of Injury Analysis and Prevention Programs at the Loyola University Burn & Shock
Trauma Institute and Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship as well as Surgical Residency Program Director.
Additionally he was Medical Director of the Trauma Registry. He was also an Adjunct Professor of Health Resources
Management in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Dr. Esposito received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and a Masters
degree in Public Health from the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine in Seattle,
Washington. He did his surgical training at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Following his residency, Dr.
Esposito completed fellowships in Critical Care and Traumatology at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services
Systems, and in Injury Prevention at Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center in Seattle.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Esposito also holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical MEDICAL RESUMES
Care. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a current member and former Chair of the Chicago Committee
on Trauma of the ACS as well as Chair of its Education Subcommittee. He has also been a member of the national ACS/COT.
Dr. Esposito has been elected to membership in 20 professional organizations or societies, having held leadership positions in
many of them. These include: The American Surgical Association; the American Trauma Society; the American Association for
the Surgery of Trauma; the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma; the National Association of EMS Physicians; the
Chicago Metropolitan Trauma Society; the Chicago Committee on Trauma; Society of University Surgeons; the Society for
Academic Surgery; Society of Critical Care Medicine; the American Public Health Association and the Illinois Public Health
Association; among others.
He has been appointed to the AAST and EAST Committees on the Future of Trauma Surgery and has served on the AAST Billing
and Coding Committee. He has also served two terms as the Chair of the AAST Injury Assessment and Outcome Committee as
well as the EAST Task Force on Research Related Issues. He has served on the EAST Board of Directors. He has also served on
the AAST’s Acute Care Surgery Committee. He has held an appointment from the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to the
National Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council (NEMSAC) and has served as a consultant to a number of states,
including Colorado, Montana, Utah and Arkansas on EMS and trauma care system issues. He has served as a trauma center and
trauma system site reviewer for the ACS, NHTSA and the states of Mississippi, Maryland, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. He
has served on the ACS/COT Trauma Systems Planning and Evaluation Committee and as a faculty member in NHTSA’s
Development of Trauma Systems Seminar program. He has served as a faculty member for the society of Trauma Nurses
Trauma Outcomes Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC). He has been active in the governance of the Illinois State Trauma
System and served as Co-Chair of the Illinois Trauma Advisory Council Sub-Committee on Legislative Affairs. He was a recipient
of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Public Service Award in 1993 and the Florida Committee on
Trauma, David Kreis Visiting Trauma Professor Award in 2005. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Critical Illness
and Trauma Foundation in Bozeman, Montana, and served as Secretary Treasurer of the EAST Foundation. He also has served
as Medical Director of the Rural Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Technical Assistance Center and has been the AAST
liason to the Brain Trauma Foundation. He has completed the ACS Surgeons as Leaders Course.
Dr. Esposito has lectured widely both nationally and internationally and has presented his research at numerous professional
organization meetings as well as served as a moderator or participant on various educational panels. He was the second
Burlington Northern Visiting Lecturer in Trauma at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and the Florida Committee
on Trauma, David Kreis Visiting Trauma Professor. He is a long standing ATLS and ATOM instructor and course director. He was
honored as ATLS Instructor of the year in 2009 by the Chicago COT. He is also an ASSET and B-CON Instructor.
He also is regularly asked to serve as an expert witness and case reviewer for both the plaintiff and defense.
