Specialist shipping firm Thomas Copper & Stibbard is to launch in a new office in Paris following the hire of a three-partner shipping team from the local arm of Reed Smith Richards Butler, including the US firm's local managing partner. Lars Lewis, who has headed Reed Smith's Paris office since 2002, will join Thomas Cooper next month alongside local shipping head Peter Iglikowski and shipping partner Christophe Hunkeler.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has taken the lead opposite a raft of US firms to advise on the $1.8bn (£917m) joint venture between building material producers Owens Corning and Saint-Gobain.The magic circle firm advised longstanding client Saint-Gobain, which has combined its glass reinforcements business with that of Owens Corning to create OCV Reinforcements.

Simmons & Simmons has boosted its international offering after securing a merger with Spanish firm Mochales & Palacios and hiring a new practice head in the Middle East. The top 10 City firm has agreed a merger with Madrid-based Mochales, with the move adding four partners to a combined Spanish practice that now numbers 27 lawyers. Simmons has transferred City-based projects head Richard Armitage to Madrid to become Spanish managing partner.

Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has taken a lead role on the €885m (£595m) sale of European parking company APCOA to Eurazeo. The US firm advised APCOA's seller, Investcorp, on the deal, which was announced last week (19 February). Eurazeo was one of a number of bidders competing for APCOA in an auction process lasting several months. Rival bidders are thought to have included UK car park operator NCP and Macquarie Bank, as well as buy-out house Bridgepoint.
