Linklaters' new senior partner Robert Elliott has spent much of his first weeks in office courting general counsel. Since formally succeeding David Cheyne in the role at the start of this month, Elliott has paid a visit to most of the firm's top 50 clients, which include the likes of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and BP. The number of meetings represents something of a shift for Linklaters, demonstrating its recognition of the growing power of in-house counsel and the way the firm needs to change its service accordingly.

When Dan Fitz took over as BT's group general counsel in April 2010, it was with the mandate to assess whether the FTSE 100 telecoms giant was getting value for its internal and external legal expenditure – a not insignificant task, considering BT has operations in 170 countries and a legal function divided into six distinct groups headed by six general counsel or chief counsel. Job cuts of around 20% of BT's workforce in 2008 and 2009, including around the same percentage of cuts within the legal team, also meant Fitz was required to assess whether the structure of the remaining 430-strong legal team was fit for purpose.

"It's a bit like being a cox in a rowing boat. If everyone is rowing in sync, the boat is going to move much better. My role is part helping set the direction and part getting everyone pointing the same way and oiling the machinery to achieve this," says Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's Mark Rawlinson of his new role as London head. Freshfields born and raised, the role is not Rawlinson's first management position at the firm he joined in 1982, following a three-year stint as London corporate head that ended this summer. However, in taking over from his predecessor Tim Jones, Rawlinson, who to date has been better known for his transactional work than management matters, has set himself a bigger challenge: transforming the office's working culture.

Clifford Chance (CC) senior partner Malcolm Sweeting is certainly no Stuart Popham. Popham, a born public speaker, who many suggest would have made a brilliant politician, ended his eight years as senior partner with a strong profile in industry that reflected the figurehead style he brought to the role. In contrast, Sweeting's electoral platform was a very different one. As a self-proclaimed "guardian of the partnership culture", Sweeting's take on the role is much more internal-facing. Indeed, one of the City finance partner's key objectives during his first nine months in office has been to ensure he is constantly visible to the partners and that they know what he is up to.
