    Women in law: Role models

    By Charlotte Edmond | February 10, 2010

"When I first started out I was doing a range of work - it was excellent exposure and I had to grow up very fast. It was the boom time in the late 80s and I decided to try my hand at a bigger firm. It was intimidating at first - every second person seemed to be public school and I thought I'd made a mistake. But I realised it was a lot more diverse, grew to love it and got involved in all sorts of interesting work. I haven't looked back."

He recently returned from Abu Dhabi, where he spent much of last year leading the primary contractor selection on United Arab Emirates' nuclear power programme, which CH2M Hill is project managing - a baptism of fire to a job that Richards began in September 2008. It has been an interesting project, he says, but has not left much time to get to grips with the other elements of his newly-created London-based role.

Belgian Post general counsel and company secretary Dirk Tirez believes the expanding role of in-house lawyers has its roots in a process that runs deeper than the financial crisis. "For me it's about a gradual increase in professionalism among in-house counsel that we have been seeing for a while now. Do I see it being turned back when market conditions improve? No. Expectations have been raised in a way that would be impossible to reverse," he says.
