The key debating issue for politicians in the run up to the general election was the parties' plans for deficit reduction and the effect their decisions will have on economic recovery. Although all three main parties agree public sector spending must be cut, each has their own approach. And with a probable period of austerity ahead, it is understandable investors could be concerned.

It's the first day of the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at BPP Law School's Holborn branch. To break the ice, the tutor suggests that each person tells everyone else what they did over the summer. Cue the usual tales of vacation schemes and exotic holidays. Finally, it's the turn of the scruffy older guy in the corner. "I did some gigs in Hyde Park, then headlined Glastonbury." "A few people thought I was joking at first," explains Dave Rowntree, LPC student and drummer in the band Blur. "But they googled me and found out I was telling the truth. Not that it was a big deal - after a day it was obvious I wasn't going to turn up in a diamond-encrusted Rolls Royce and laud it over everyone. I'm serious about the law and love learning."

Having spent the bulk of my first career as an in-house lawyer (investment banking and wealth management), in 2006 I moved to a front office management role within the same bank that I had worked in for some seven years. In 2009, I moved to Barclays Wealth to head up the private bank's proposition for UK resident non-domiciled clients (RND), which includes responsibility for a team of private bankers and the objective of enhancing our banking and investment offering for RND clients. Four years on, and given all that has happened in the markets and financial services industry, it's perhaps time to reflect on the decision to leave law and share some thoughts that may inform, encourage or even deter someone thinking about doing something similar...

In today's stressful and competitive business world, taking the time to review your wardrobe and overall executive presence can be a sound investment. Like it or not, your clothes speak for you - while a stylish blazer and skirt combo can say 'successful, confident and polished', a crinkled, ill-fitting suit can suggest all the wrong things about your attitude. In any work setting that does not require a formal uniform,we make choices every day about how we dress. And it is because of this element of choice that a lawyer's business attire can reveal a lot about his or her confidence, personality and aspirations within the firm.

There are few people who would have swapped places with Alistair Darling last month as he faced the seemingly impossible task of steering a course between a politically expedient but fiscally disastrous 'giveaway' budget and alienating Labour's core supporters with a clear plan to tackle the huge fiscal deficit.

I am a six-plus year post-qualification experience (PQE) real estate finance lawyer at Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP). I am also a triathlete who has competed at several World Championships. I now work a three-day week so that I have enough time to train for elite triathlon races, an arrangement first suggested by the partners at my firm. I studied law, with an Erasmus year in France, and then trained at BLP. I qualified there in 2003 and am now six-and-a-half years PQE in the real estate finance department. I love being a lawyer and have never considered any other career, although I have had to put my legal aspirations on the back burner for the moment, taking on a more business-focused role and more regular hours so that I can concentrate on my training.

It is the dream of many musicians to have the opportunity to perform at Glyndebourne, the world-famous opera house. So how did over one hundred members of Allen & Overy (A&O) staff and its alumni have the opportunity to realise that dream by performing Mozart's The Magic Flute at Glyndebourne on a Saturday evening in February, and in doing so become the first corporate organisation to perform there? The seed was sown some years ago when Guy Beringer, A&O's recently retired senior partner, was given a tour backstage and asked how Glyndebourne used the space during the off-season. On being told it was usually closed, he said he felt sure that many outside organisations would be keen to use it.

Having established itself as a hub for the booming East-West business, the Austrian capital is a popular business venue not only for its convenient location, but also because of its tight-knit network of financial institutions and specialists such as lawyers, tax advisers and consultants. Lawyers hardened to the locals' cultural superiority will enjoy the capital for its efficient approach to business, as well as its undeniably rich cultural history.

In a 2007 report about public and private sector approaches to sabbaticals, researchers at the University of Illinois found that "many corporations consider the benefits of sabbaticals so self-evident that they forego the expense of documenting them." A stronger endorsement is hard to imagine.
