    Breaking the language barrier

    By Legal Week | August 19, 2009

It all started with a frustrating phone call with one of the translation agencies I was using in my capacity as a lawyer a couple of years ago. Although the agency was highly reputable and offered translation services in more languages than I knew existed, the quality of the translation left much to be desired. And, I had a tight deadline.

City firms' penchant for ever greater levels of specialisation should be cause for alarm, says former magic circle trainee Dominic Webb...Large commercial firms are rammed full of specialists. Ask them an intellectual property question and you will be introduced to lawyers who deal only with IP. Instruct them on a banking matter and they will not only use a team of banking lawyers

    Getting a smart start

    By Legal Week | July 30, 2009

Earlier this year, I spent time visiting schools in some of the more deprived parts of London. I saw for myself the positive impact that work experience can have for young people - in particular for those who do not have family or friends in a position to help them get that experience. Work experience is an essential first step on the career ladder for many top professions. Without it, young people can find themselves falling at the first hurdle when applying for jobs in their chosen career. But not everyone has the same access to work experience and internships in certain professions. It often depends on who you know, rather than what you know.

    The charitable channel

    By Legal Week | July 23, 2009

ITV Legal is throwing down the gauntlet for other companies to increase the pro bono community beyond the confines of private practice by launching a joint pro bono initiative - the ITV Legal Pro Bono Bank - with panel firm Lovells. This is the first time in the UK that in-house lawyers within a bluechip corporate will engage in a full-service pro bono programme, allowing them to utilise the pro bono infrastructure and client base of a City firm.

    The life of O'Brien

    By Legal Week | July 15, 2009

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer veteran dealmaker Barry O'Brien does a good line in 1980s war stories. All-nighters rounded off by pints of Guinness at Smithfield market pubs feature heavily. As do hostile takeover bids, many of them initiated by highly personal full-page newspaper ads

No canteen, no gym…and I don't read about what I'm doing in the FT

    By Legal Week | July 13, 2009

Reactions among my magic circle colleagues ranged considerably when I announced that I was qualifying into a niche private client firm. On the one hand, the hearty and genuine congratulations for having 'escaped', on the other, the frankly bemused.

    Success stories

    By Legal Week | July 2, 2009

With their weakness for long-winded sentences, concern with preserving reputation and grinding 24/7 workloads, lawyers aren't the sort of people you'd immediately associate with creative writing. But the link between law and literature has always been strong. And where Charles Dickens, Henry Cecil Leon and John Mortimer once walked, now come the next generation of lawyer-novelists.
