    Mergermarket ranks 2007's busiest deal lawyers

    Clifford Chance (CC) Duesseldorf competition partner Marc Besen and Linklaters UK private equity partner Richard Youle have been named as Europe's most active deal-doers for 2007, according to Mergermarket. Individual rankings produced for Legal Week show Besen and Youle have both advised on 15 M&A deals over the calendar year, with both acting on deals worth a combined value of slightly less than €5bn (£3.59bn).

    Post-merger Dewey promotes 18 new partners

    Dewey & LeBoeuf has announced its partner promotions for the year, with the firm making up 18 associates, including four in the City. New York receives five new partners, the most of any office, while Washington DC gains three. The firm's branches in Moscow, Warsaw, Almaty, Milan and Texas each gain one new partner apiece.

    Reed Smith Richards Butler has announced its latest round of partner promotions, with 31 new partners made up around the world - although just three come in the City. The promotions, which take effect from 1 January, 2008, see lawyers made up in 12 of the transatlantic firm's 21 offices. In London, the new partners are James Wilson (corporate), Thomas Ince (employment) and Emma Lenthall (litigation).

    Freshfields and A&O latest to enter US bonus war

    Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Allen & Overy have become the latest firms to announce they will be paying one-off bonuses to their New York associates. Both firms have met market rates, with associates at Freshfields to be given from $10,000 (£4,900) to $50,000 (£24,400) depending on seniority, in addition to the firm's scheduled bonus of between $35,000 (£17,000) and $65,000 (£31,700). The special bonus will be paid at the end of this month, with a year-end bonus being paid on 31 December.
