Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has seen the departure of high-profile international arbitration head Jan Paulsson, as competition partner Andrea Gomes da Silva prepares to take up a nine-month secondment at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). Paulsson, who joined the firm in 1989 and has been the head of Freshfields' international arbitration group for around 20 years, is top-ranked by Chambers and Partners for global arbitration and public international law.

The Government has unveiled a new 'opt out' collective redress system, described as "a quantum leap towards US-style class actions", as part of a series of wide-ranging competition law reforms following a consultation last year. Australia's Minter Ellison has continued to rebuild in Perth with the hire of competition partner Matthew Knox from Corrs Chambers Westgarth. Knox, whose practice has a focus on the energy and resources sector, joins Perth's nine-partner office, which in 2011 saw the departure of around 80 lawyers - including 14 partners - to Squire Sanders. The firm subsequently relaunched its own integrated office in the western Australian city.

Bakers leads UPS-TNT deal challenge as €5.2bn takeover collapses

Baker & McKenzie has successfully challenged the proposed €5.2bn (£4.3bn) takeover of delivery giant TNT Express by United Parcel Service (UPS), which has collapsed after the European Commission moved to block the deal. FedEx challenged the merger on competitive grounds after UPS's bid was announced in early 2012, with the European Commission subsequently opening an investigation into the proposed deal in July.
