Italian energy deals on the rise as subsidy deadline approaches

A surge of Italian energy deals has provided a ray of light for local lawyers as companies rush to sign off renewables projects before subsidies are cut next year. The Italian Government has been giving companies subsidies, known as feed-in tariffs, since 2007, to boost renewable energy projects, but is set to amend the regime shortly.

Powering into the FTSE 100

In December last year, energy company Aggreko joined the heavyweights of the stock market, entering the FTSE 100 for the first time following an 18% rise in its share price. For the company's director of legal affairs, Peter Kennerley, who joined from Scottish & Newcastle in October 2008, it feels good to be back. "When I was in the process of moving from Scottish & Newcastle [a FTSE 100 company until it was de-listed following its takeover by Heineken and Carlsberg in April 2008], my chief executive, Rupert Soames, joked that if I came on board he'd guarantee we would get into the FTSE 100. So it looks like he's fulfilled that side of the bargain," he says.

Denton Wilde Sapte has become the latest firm to announce a reduced promotions round for 2010, with just two lawyers made up to partner, both of who are based outside of the UK. The total number of new partners is down by more than half on last year, when six were made up, and significantly less than the 2008 round, when 12 joined the partnership.
