Financial institutions partner James Smethurst and corporate head Julian Long led the Freshfields team while a duo of US law firms also took key roles advising Aon on the move, with Sidley Austin advising on US law aspects and McDermott Will & Emery leading on tax issues.

  • Aviva appoints Clydes and CMS to new reinsurance legal panel

    Clyde & Co and CMS Cameron McKenna have won appointments on Aviva's new reinsurance panel, put together after the insurance giant's former exclusive adviser Barlow Lyde & Gilbert merged with Clydes in November last year. Clydes and Camerons were both appointed as Aviva's UK reinsurance advisers for a two-year term taking effect from 1 January, with both also set to handle most of the reinsurance work driven from the UK for the wider Aviva Group globally.

  • Freshfields and Links lead on PFI monoline swap-out

    Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters have taken lead roles on the first private finance initiative (PFI) monoline insurance company replacement since the start of the global financial crisis. The deal has seen Ambac Assurance UK – the guarantor of £97m of senior bonds raised to construct Worcestershire Hospital – replaced after the value of the credit enhancement it provided fell. Assured Guaranty (Europe) and Assured Guaranty Municipal Corporation have replaced Ambac.

    The total amount of compulsory professional indemnity insurance (PII) payments by solicitors has risen by 20% this year, according to new figures from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) The cost of the compulsory layer of PII for the 10,917 practices in England and Wales is up to £256m for 2011-12, 20% higher than last year's figure of £214m.

    Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC) is set to launch its first-ever international office in Singapore with the hire of a partner from Barlow 
Lyde & Gilbert. The firm's new Singapore arm is set to go live on 
1 November this year, with Barlows' local insurance and reinsurance chief Mark Errington joining to head up the office. The move comes as the firm increasingly targets the insurance market in the region, with growing numbers of insurers setting up a presence in Singapore as an access point for the wider Asia market. RPC is planning to grow the office at both partner and associate level through a combination of hires and relocations over the coming months.
