Jones Day follows Duesseldorf opening with Amsterdam launch plans

Jones Day is set expand its European footprint with the launch of an Amsterdam office in early 2013. The new base, which will initially concentrate on corporate and M&A, private equity, capital markets, litigation and antitrust, will be led by Luc Houben, who had previously held the role of partner-in-charge at the US firm's Brussels office.

Nomura global head of legal and general counsel for wholesale David Graham has left the bank just over a year after taking up the role, provoking a wider restructuring of the legal team. Graham left the Japanese bank in September. He has not yet been replaced, with his responsibilities set to be split between Nomura chief legal officer, Noriaki Nagai, and other regional legal heads.

Hogan Lovells to close Abu Dhabi base to focus on Dubai hub

Hogan Lovells will close its Abu Dhabi office and transfer all its work to the firm's Dubai hub by the end of this year, the firm confirmed today. Hogan Lovells, which also has offices in Jeddah and Riyadh, is currently in talks with the five partners, three associates and counsel currently working out of Abu Dhabi, as to where they will be based after the office's closure. Four of the partners - Waajid Siddiqui, Bruce Parmley, Mark Mazo and James Gede - currently split their time between Abu Dhabi and Lovells' offices in the US.

The City firm is launching a restructuring that what will see a number of partners leave the firm, although it is not clear which practice areas will be affected. K&L Gates' management committee, comprising sixty voting members representing the firm's offices and major practices, re-appointed Kalis, who ran unopposed, following partner consultations in each of the firm's 41 offices.

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and McDermott Will & Emery are among a four firm line-up set to receive licences to launch in South Korea tomorrow (26 September), as the country pushes ahead with opening its legal market to international firms. The non-exclusive alliance, which took effect earlier this month, extends an informal working relationship between the pair which started two years ago. The US firm decided to formalise the alliance in anticipation of large projects and transactions resulting from the country's economic crisis and structural reforms in Greece.

Herbert Smith Freehills will elect a sole chief executive 18 months after the merger between the UK and Australian law firm goes live next month. CCurrent Herbert Smith managing partner Willis and Freehills chief executive Bell (both pictured) will jointly lead the combined firm until May 2014 following the 1 October merger between the two firms. Bell, who has been chief executive at Freehills since 2005, has been seen as the more likely candidate to lead the combined firm after this date however it is possible that another candidate could come forward.
