Taylor Wessing recruits COO and HR director with Linklaters and Deloitte hires

Taylor Wessing has made a double management hire with the addition of a chief operating officer and a human resources director. The firm has hired Linklaters' London HR director Caroline Rawes and Deloitte chief of staff Clare Singleton as HR director and COO respectively. Singleton will join next week (31 January), with Rawes set to move in May. The two roles, which will cover both the UK as well as international projects, were previously covered by COO Jonathan Croucher, who left the firm at the end of last year to become a full-time vicar.

Offshore law duo announce redundancies

Offshore law firms Appleby and Conyers Dill & Pearman have cut a number of jobs in Bermuda in response to reduced work levels in the region. Appleby has made 11 redundancies in Bermuda, including two lawyers, with business support units bearing the brunt of the cuts. The firm said it had taken the decision in response to reduced workflows over the last two years.

There might be signs of a more robust (or at least a more stabilised) legal market, but let's not forget the thousands of jobless law grads and laid-off lawyers still out on the streets. A couple of months ago on this blog, I asked an obvious question - now that times are better, why won't firms rehire some of those who were laid off during the economic downturn? I've heard from a few partners and headhunters who told me - off the record, of course - that those laid-off were not top drawer to begin with. The really good lawyers, they contend, were all kept on.

Trowers & Hamlins is set to make another round of job cuts in London and Manchester after confirming that turnover has fallen behind budget for the first half of the financial year. The firm has confirmed that it is reviewing five fee earner roles and two staff jobs in Manchester as well as four fee earner roles in London, after reviewing three or four UK positions in August this year.

Barlows confirms three more partner departures and associate job cuts

Barlow Lyde & Gilbert has confirmed that three partners from its corporate and commercial group have been asked to leave the firm alongside a handful of associates who have taken voluntary redundancy. As first reported by RollonFriday today (19 November), Barlows has made changes to its corporate group in order to align the firm more closely with its core sectors, including insurance and energy. Five or six associates are expected to leave the firm, with one further partner from the corporate group understood to have been offered a consultancy role.

The consultation, which is being led by tax partner Karen Hughes, started in early November, and will see a number of the group's associates assessed based on current and expected work levels as well as personal performance. Hogan Lovells' London tax practice currently has five partners and 14 associates. It works with clients including Barclays, ExxonMobil and Ford.

The firm said that the decision to cut jobs had been made after consulting with clients, and cited continuing uncertainty in the markets as a key factor for the redundancies.
