Linklaters has picked up its second Herbert Smith Freehills financial regulatory partner in under six months, with the magic circle firm set to bring in Nikunj Kiri as a partner. His hire comes after Legal Week reported in September that Linklaters had hired contentious regulatory heavyweight Martyn Hopper to boost its City practice.

Monckton QC steers Iceland to Euro court victory in bank collapse dispute

Monckton Chambers' Tim Ward QC has successfully steered the Icelandic Government to victory in the European courts, with a ruling yesterday (28 January) meaning that the country is not obliged to repay Britain and the Netherlands for rescuing savers in the collapsed Icesave bank. A European Free Trade Association (EFTA) court in Luxembourg yesterday (29 January) dismissed an application brought by the EFTA Surveillance Authority and the European Commission (EC), with Ward defending the Icelandic Government from allegations that it failed to guarantee minimum levels of compensation to savers in the bank.

Senior lawyers at Morrison & Foerster (MoFo), Blackstone Chambers and Doughty Street Chambers have advised on the high-profile application to ensure anonymity for 104 current and former Barclays employees named in a Libor test case. The High Court ruling last week saw Mr Justice Flaux find in favour of a challenge by four media organisations, including the Financial Times and the Telegraph Media Group, which argued that naming those involved was in the interest of the public.

Herbert Smith and Eversheds carve up £70m in TfL billings over five years

Herbert Smith Freehills and Eversheds have earned a combined total of more than £70m from work for Transport for London (TfL) since 2008, a freedom of information request submitted by Legal Week has revealed. The two firms are the biggest earners from contracts awarded by the transport body over the five-year period to the end of 2012, with Herbert Smith billing £42.2m and Eversheds £31.5m. But finally, America's leading law firms appear to be taking litigation work in Asia seriously. Latham & Watkins, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and O'Melveny & Myers are among several US outfits with plans to strengthen their local disputes teams, while Davis Polk & Wardwell recently entered the litigation arena with the hire of two well-regarded litigators from Clifford Chance (CC).
