Seven UK QCs appointed to Govt commission to look into case for British Bill of Rights

A heavyweight group of QCs has been pulled together by the Government to investigate the case for a UK Bill of Rights and look at reforming the European Court of Human Rights in the wake of a number of controversial European rulings. Seven QCs were appointed to the nine-member commission of human rights experts, launched last week (18 March) by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke.

Howrey's last remaining London partner has joined US firm Fulbright & Jaworski's City office, following the firm's decision to dissolve last week (15 March). Litigator John Evans, who joined Fulbright's disputes and investigations practice in London today (21 March), has more than three decades of experience in private practice, including 17 years as a partner at Ashurst and five years as a partner in Howrey's London office.

Links to sue former Italian ally Gianni over Credit Suisse-Parmalat deal

Linklaters has filed negligence claims against Italian law firm Gianni Origoni Grippo & Partners relating to advice given by the magic circle firm to Credit Suisse on a deal with Italian food company Parmalat nearly 10 years ago. The claims, which were filed in the Admiralty and Commercial division of the High Court earlier this month (10 March), see Linklaters suing the Italian independent law firm as well as launching a number of claims against individuals. These include Gianni's former UK managing partner Bruno Bartocci, now a partner at Legance in Italy, and former London associate Andrea Platania. Gianni founding partners Francesco Gianni and GianBattista Origoni are named as legal representatives of the firm.

Lord Neuberger puts forward case for televised court hearings

Court hearings may soon be televised, following recommendations made this week by the Master of the Rolls, Lord Neuberger. Speaking at the Judicial Studies Board annual lecture on Wednesday (16 April), Neuberger put forward the argument for some hearings from the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal to be televised, on an equivalent of the Parliament Channel or via BBC iPlayer.

Trio of firms advise as Tchenguiz brothers win right to sue Kaupthing

The Tchenguiz brothers are free to push ahead with claims worth more than £1bn against failed Icelandic bank Kaupthing in the English courts, after a ruling earlier today which handed roles to a trio of firms. Mr Justice Burton today (16 March) dismissed Kaupthing's attempts to strike out the claims and challenge the jurisdiction of the English court, paving the way for the English High Court to hear damages claims by the Tchenguiz Family Trust and the Tchenguiz Discretionary Trust, together worth more than £1bn.

No US lawsuit in recent history has been the source of more partisan rancour than Bush v Gore. It divided everyone, it seems, except the two lawyers who argued opposing sides of the 2000 case before the US Supreme Court: Theodore Olson and David Boies. "When I was watching David on television explaining the positions he was advancing on behalf of Vice President Gore, no matter how much I disagreed with him, I found myself nodding my head," says Olson with a grin. "I thought that was really dangerous." Adds Boies of Olson: "In the Bush v Gore arguments you could sit back and really admire what [Ted] was doing and his command of the cases, his command of the facts, his ability to weave them together and to actually tell a story… But you couldn't actually enjoy it."

The 120-strong round saw barristers from 76 chambers across the country securing the elite QC kitemark, with No5 Chambers, Thirty Nine Essex Street/82 King Street and Maitland Chambers all achieving the highest share of successful applicants, with four apiece.
