Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has brought in its first major lateral hire in New York since the magic circle law firm launched its US litigation practice earlier this year. David Onorato is to join the New York office as a partner in the litigation practice. He was previously deputy general counsel and director of litigation with Bank of America (BoA).

Nabarro in second redundancy round as profits fall

Nabarro has reported a 9.7% drop in revenue for the 2008-09 financial year while profits per equity partner (PEP) have fallen by 35%. Unaudited figures from the firm show that revenue for the last financial year stood at £126.5m, down from last year's equivalent figure of £140.1m. PEP fell to £375,000, down from last year's equivalent figure of £574,000.

Charles Russell sees PEP fall by 30% with revenue down 3%

Charles Russell has joined the ranks of firms reporting a drop in profits per equity partner (PEP) of more than 30%. The UK top 50 firm has reported a plunge of 36%, with PEP falling to £235,000 in 2008-09, down from £368,000 the previous year. The firm initially reported a PEP figure of £419,000 for 2007-08; however, this figure reduced as a result of accounting adjustments. The fall in PEP came against a slight dip in turnover to £69.5m, down 3.2% from the £71.8m figure the firm billed in 2007-08.

CC's US arm wins defence for ING in class action suit

Clifford Chance's (CC's) US litigation team has successfully defended ING Life Insurance in a class action suit in the Washington DC court of appeals. The privacy case, which had been brought on behalf of Washington DC government employees alleging that ING lost their private, sensitive financial and personal information, was dismissed last month (18 June) with the court ruling in favour of the insurer.

Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has recruited another Clifford Chance (CC) partner in New York, a move which means the US firm has now taken on 11 litigation lawyers from CC during the past month. JAC figures show drop-off in ethnic minority and female appointments

The percentage of appointments to judicial posts from black and ethnic minorities fell during the past year, with the proportion of successful female applicants also seeing a decrease. The Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) received 3,514 valid applications for legal and non-legal positions for the period from 1 April 2008 to 31 March 2009 - an increase of almost 40% on the 2,535 during the previous year.
