QC sues publisher in reference book dispute

Wilberforce Chambers' David Phillips QC is set for a £300,000 battle with Reed Elsevier, after the publishers allegedly reneged on an agreement to provide him with a lifetime's free access to a reference book. Phillips, who has particular experience acting in relation to football disputes, is suing the UK division of the publisher, trading as LexisNexis Butterworths, for £316,730 including interest and costs.

Govt names first Legal Services Board members

The Government has appointed the first-ever members of the Legal Services Board (LSB), with Financial Services Authority general counsel Andrew Whittaker and Irwin Mitchell senior partner Michael Napier QC among those to get the nod. The board, which was appointed by Lord Chancellor and justice secretary Jack Straw, was announced today (17 July) and will see the nine-member body take up their roles on 1 September for a three-year period.

Pharma price-fixing case thrown out of court

Jones Day, Norton Rose and SJ Berwin have won a landmark case which has seen an estimated £40m Serious Fraud office (SFO) case against five pharmaceutical companies thrown out the Court. The decision, which was handed down by Mr Justice Pitchford today (11 July) will see the SFO's case against Goldshield, Norton Healthcare, Generics UK, Ranbaxy UK, Kent Pharmaceuticals and a number of individuals struck out.

An independent review into the Civil Justice Council has recommended that the body retain its role as an advisory public body. The review, compiled by Dr Jonathan Spector and commissioned by the Ministry of Justice in February, has made 27 recommendations designed to increase the relevance, value and visibility of the body's work to the users of the civil justice system.

Gibson Dunn secures hire of ex-Lord Chancellor

Former Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer has joined Gibson Dunn & Crutcher's London office as a senior counsel, the West coast US law firm announced today (8 July). The unusual hire, which saw Falconer join the firm yesterday, ends month of speculation over Falconer's future after he stepped down from Government last year.The move comes less than a year after former Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith QC, moved to the City arm of Debevoise & Plimpton to head its European litigation practice.
