Northern Ireland: 12 months of strife, but things are looking up

Twelve months ago I wrote an article in these pages attempting to predict how Northern Ireland's (NI) law firms would fare in the short and medium term. My conclusion was that initially there would be a levelling out of growth but mid-term well-balanced firms should continue to be able to grow. So, how have we done and how far off the mark was I?

Davis Polk to close Frankfurt office as local chief steps down

Davis Polk & Wardwell has opted to close its Frankfurt office when resident partner Patrick Kenadjian retires at the end of August, reports The Am Law Daily. In the meantime, the office's designated successor, London-based partner Harald Halbhuber, decided to leave the firm for personal reasons, according to managing partner John Ettinger. Career Clinic: Redundancy - what next?

"Earlier this year I was made redundant from my role as a mid-level corporate lawyer at a US law firm, before which I spent a couple of years at a magic circle firm. I have good academics and my performance reviews have always been good, but I am finding it impossible to find a new role at any firm (both small West End firms and large UK firms). "I've thought about studying, but don't think that I can finance this. My attempts to find non-legal temporary admin roles have been futile so far. I have played out the scenarios and am torn between chasing what few roles there are out there in the hope that I can beat the competition, or starting again, which I really don't want to do as I did enjoy my job as a corporate lawyer.
