Suspension Recommended for Attorney for Allegedly Inflating Resume
The D.C. Bar's Board on Professional Responsibility has recommended a 30-day suspension for attorney Gregory Hawn for allegedly padding his resume. In April, Legal Times reported that the D.C. Bar Counsel had accused Hawn, an associate at Bracewell & Giuliani, of falsifying his resume and altering his law school transcript while trying to get a job at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw. Hawn quit Bracewell after the firm learned of the charge, which arose after he used a recruiter to aid in the attempted move.Loeb & Loeb Hires UCLA Professor as First Scholar in Residence
Loeb & Loeb's Los Angeles office has appointed its first scholar in residence, a rare arrangement that will allow University of California, Los Angeles, law professor Douglas Lichtman to share his research and strategic ideas with the firm and its clients. Lichtman focuses on patent law, copyright law and the intersection of law and technology. He'll likely attend strategy sessions or client lunches to discuss ideas, and Lichtman also expects the union to help him in his classroom and research.London Associates Get Salary Boost
Most U.K. firms with London practices have announced their new associate pay deals. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith and Linklaters are among those with significant raises for junior attorneys, following the lead of Allen & Overy and Clifford Chance who were the first to go public this spring with their new salary structures. While none match the $160,000 pay of some first-year associates in the United States, many London associates will still enjoy hefty raises in the 15 percent range.Corporate Partner Takes Fighting to Ultimate Level
It's a shame attorneys can't kick people in the face and wrestle them to the ground when merger talks aren't going so well. But at least Khoa Do gets to do it outside of work. The 35-year-old Greenberg Traurig corporate partner practices what's known as ultimate fighting. To the unschooled, matches look pretty much like two people beating each other up with just about every type of move but eye gouges. And the discipline and strategy necessary for the sport may help him with legal deals too.New Hire Makes 11 for Thelen's Shanghai Office

Within two months, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati says it will close the 13-lawyer Salt Lake City outpost it opened in 2001. The firm says the office's closing is not "a failure" and was driven by a decision to bring partner Robert O'Connor back to the San Francisco Bay Area to help organize and manage Wilson Sonsini's growing clean-tech practice. Longtime corporate partner Mark Bonham (pictured) will remain in Utah, bringing four associates with him to 90-lawyer local firm Ray Quinney & Nebeker.Reed Smith Talks Texas With Other Firms
Reed Smith is eyeing Texas for expansion. Ideally, says Gregory Jordan, Reed Smith's Pittsburgh-based managing partner, the 1,077-lawyer firm would move into Texas by combining with a firm that already has lawyers in Houston, Dallas and Austin. In a similar course of action, Reed Smith expanded into California in 2003 by merging with 215-lawyer Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May.Davies Arnold Cooper Completes Merger With London's KSB Law

A group of Morrison & Foerster real estate and land use partners are headed to 100-lawyer real estate firm Cox, Castle & Nicholson. The moves echo a trend that larger law firms are increasingly seeing, of less lucrative practices falling by the wayside. "It's not that uncommon for a real estate practice not to fit as well at an Am Law 100 firm as at a smaller firm," said law firm consultant Peter Zeughauser.Trending Stories
