Sheppard Mullin Associate Pictures Trapeze Hobby as Recruiting Event
When associate Heather Cooper has a tough work week, she releases stress by flying through the air. Cooper, a fourth-year at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, has taken up trapeze classes at California's Hollywood Aerial Arts, an activity she says is a great complement to her day job as an antitrust attorney. "It really is a high-wire balancing act, like the practice of law often is," she says. And this summer she's hoping to invite the summer associates along as one of her firm's recruitment activities.Lawyers' Age Bias and Contract Breach Claims Against Hunton & Williams Could Settle
A pair of multimillion-dollar suits against Richmond, Va.-based Hunton & Williams by former partners may soon be settled, says the plaintiffs' attorney, Donald Temple. David Geneson is seeking $3 million, alleging that after he resigned from the firm after 19 years, he was deprived of his entitled payment as a partner and that his partnership interest was forfeited. Pauline Schneider, who was at Hunton for 21 years, is seeking $2.5 million for her claims of age discrimination and breach of contract.Alston & Bird Raises First-Year Pay Yet Again
Alston & Bird has raised the starting salary for first-year associates in its Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., offices to $145,000 -- almost 50 percent more than it was paying them a mere 15 months ago. It also has raised the starting salary for Atlanta patent attorneys to $160,000. The raises are effective April 1, which is, of course, April Fool's Day. "And we are," a managing partner said ruefully.Dewey & LeBoeuf Expands Frankfurt Office

Among the big billers: Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which said in court papers it is owed $12.59 million in fees and $678,644 in expenses for the period in question. A judge will consider the requests at a hearing Oct. 25.Clifford Chance Overhauls Pension Plan to Comply With New Age Discrimination Laws
Clifford Chance has voted to update its early retirement package for partners, with the Magic Circle firm bringing the system in line with age discrimination laws. Under the new system, which is retroactive to Jan. 1, more partners will qualify for the pension payments. The plan got 93 percent approval in voting that closed within the past week, according to executive partner Chris Perrin.Former Cravath Associate Pleads Guilty in Underage Sex Scandal
A former Cravath, Swaine & Moore associate has pleaded guilty to rape charges stemming from his sexual relationships with three underage girls. James P. Colliton pleaded guilty to second- and third-degree rape felony charges as well as one count of patronizing a prostitute and agreed to one-year prison sentences on each charge, to be served concurrently. Fired from Cravath when his conduct came to light, Colliton also agreed to register as a sex offender.Reading Is Fundamentalist: Guantanamo Librarian Wanted
Attention law librarians: If you're burnt out on your current job, there's always the chief librarian post at Guantanamo Bay. While the number of books at the prison is to increase from 4,500 to 20,000, exactly what will be allowed is unclear since all books are screened for content. Arabic-English dictionaries are conspicuously left off a list of possible new selections, and lawyers for detainees say there's a ban on "Hansel and Gretel," "Macbeth" and "Guantanamo and the Abuse of Presidential Power."Trending Stories
