Partners Approve Merger Between Dewey and LeBoeuf
Dewey Ballantine and LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae announced Wednesday that their partners have formally approved the combination of the two firms into Dewey & LeBoeuf, effective Monday. With 1,300 lawyers in 12 countries, the combination is the largest ever between two New York-based firms, both of which have taken active measures in recent years to bolster their competitive position in a crowded marketplace.Schnader Harrison Increases Starting Salary
Salaries will be on the rise at Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis in a few months. The firm will increase starting salaries from $125,000 to $135,000 in its Philadelphia office, and corresponding increases will be given in other offices as well. Securities plaintiffs lawyer William S. Lerach, who has pleaded guilty to one count of federal conspiracy in the government's Milberg Weiss investigation, is attempting to seal court documents related to his upcoming sentencing due to "personal and sensitive information," according to court papers filed on Tuesday. Jones Day Raids Baker & McKenzie's Hong Kong Office
Jones Day has announced that four lawyers from Baker & McKenzie's China division will join the firm's intellectual property practice in Hong Kong. More than 20 of Jones Day's 265 intellectual property and patent lawyers are based in Greater China, including offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taipei. The firm has more than 2,200 lawyers in 30 worldwide locations.DLA Bags Two Reed Smith Partners
DLA Piper has lured away from Reed Smith two San Francisco corporate and securities partners, Dale Freeman and Garth Osterman, who joined the firm Thursday. Locke Liddell & Sapp on Thursday followed moves made earlier in the week by Houston-based firms Vinson & Elkins and Andrews Kurth, raising first- and second-year associate salaries in its Texas and Washington, D.C., offices to $160,000 and $170,000 respectively, effective Aug. 1. "It is always our intent to remain a competitive force in the marketplace," managing partner Jerry K. Clements wrote in an e-mail to associates. Malcolm Wittenberg was disbarred Thursday by the D.C. Court of Appeals over his felony conviction for insider trading in California. He was a former partner in Crosby Heafey Roach & May's patent practice in Oakland, Calif., before the firm merged with Reed Smith in 2002. Wittenberg says he never challenged the D.C.
