Cravath Adds a Bankruptcy Practice

Cravath, Swaine & Moore apparently sees what a lot of firms see: growth in restructuring work. The firm is starting a bankruptcy practice that will be headed up by Richard Levin, who will join from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he was a partner. Cravath's announcement comes at a time when major firms like Skadden Arps, Kirkland & Ellis and Cadwalader Wickersham have been aggressively hiring bankruptcy lawyers to handle what they expect to be a lot of work in the coming months.

Suit Alleges Private Equity Firm Hid Problems at Refco, Seeks Almost $1B Damages

Private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners, which recently sued Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw over the law firm's role in the collapse of commodities brokerage Refco, was itself sued Wednesday by Refco's creditors. The complaint filed in New York federal court is seeking almost $1 billion in damages. It alleges that Lee, which bought a controlling interest in Refco in 2004, knew about serious problems with Refco internal governance, but concealed or ignored them because it wanted to proceed with an IPO.

Littler Mendelson Nears Merger Agreement With Cleveland Boutique

Labor and employment firm Littler Mendelson is nearing a merger agreement with a 47-lawyer Cleveland labor and employment boutique, Duvin, Cahn & Hutton, according to the firms. The firms began informal merger talks in June and have become more serious in recent months, said Marko Mrkonich, Littler president and managing partner. The agreement could be finalized by mid-January. The combined firm would have 585 lawyers in 39 offices and could become one of the country's 100 top-grossing law firms.

Dewey & LeBoeuf Names New Head of Paris Banking, Finance Practice

New York's Dewey & LeBoeuf has announced the arrival of Michel Quere as partner and head of the Paris banking and finance practice. Quere headed the finance group at his former firm, London's Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, from 2000 to 2006. His practice covers acquisition financing, leverage financing, debt restructuring, private equity, structured financing and asset financing. His clients include financial institutions, arrangers, investment funds and French and international companies.

Gibson Dunn Becomes Latest Firm to Open in Dubai

Gibson Dunn & Crutcher is to become the latest law firm to launch in Dubai after announcing its plans to open in the region before the end of 2007. The firm will open its new office in the Dubai International Financial Center with Washington tax partner Peter Baumbusch relocating to oversee the launch. Dubai has been the center of aggressive recruitment in recent years. Lovells, Herbert Smith and King & Spalding have all launched offices there over the last 12 months.

DLA Piper Denmark Splits, Citing Client Conflicts

DLA Piper's Denmark office is splitting from the expansive firm, citing client conflicts. The 73-lawyer practice, half of the DLA Nordic network, will become totally independent and re-brand as Horten. In a strategy review by Copenhagen partners, the firm concluded it needed to grow to between 125 and 150 lawyers and develop more clients in its core energy and pharmaceutical sectors. Horten will remain DLA's preferred referral firm in Denmark.

Latham Tops Calif.'s Prestigious Firms in Associate Survey

California associates have voted, and they agree that Latham & Watkins is the most prestigious firm to work for in the state, according to the newest Vault rankings. Ora Fisher, Latham's Silicon Valley office managing partner, chalks up the positive results from associates to several causes, including "the quality of work we get." But while Latham associates weren't surprised the firm got top billing in the Golden State, they were surprised by the all-around glowing review of being an associate at Latham.
