Willkie Farr International Trade Law Group May Move to Vinson & Elkins
Willkie Farr & Gallagher's international trade law group could jump to the Washington, D.C., office of Vinson & Elkins soon. No deal has been finalized, but William Barringer, the head of Willkie's trade group, and Jay Hebert, the co-administrative partner of Vinson's D.C. office, confirm that they are in talks. Approximately 50 percent of the work the group does is for Chinese and Asian clients, Barringer says, so the practice is looking for a firm with a presence in the region.Simpson Hikes Pay; First-Years Go to $160,000
Perhaps in a bid to keep New York the top market for associate pay, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has raised associate base salaries, with first-years now set to earn $160,000 before bonus. The firm's move, announced internally Monday, comes less than a year after an earlier round of salary increases boosted first-year salaries in New York to $145,000 from the $125,000 that had been standard for several years prior. In recent weeks, some firms have raised California first-year salaries to $145,000.Kilpatrick Launches Atlanta 'Freedom Writers'
Last month, almost 100 Kilpatrick Stockton employees and 150 students from an Atlanta high school watched the movie "Freedom Writers," which tells the story of Erin Gruwell's innovative writing program that inspired "unteachable" kids at a Los Angeles-area high school. Almost 100 of Kilpatrick's lawyers and staff have signed up to serve as writing coaches and mentors for freshmen at Booker T. CMS Cameron McKenna has joined the ranks of London firms targeting the Middle East after the addition of Lebanon's largest law firm, Levant Lawyers, to its network of alliance members. Fifty-lawyer Levant is headquartered in Beirut and has additional offices in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait. The agreement specifies that Levant will further expand in the Middle East by the end of next year. High Court Says Travelers Can Seek Attorney Fees in PG&E Bankruptcy Case
The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Travelers Casualty & Surety Co. of America can seek to recover attorney fees from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in a federal bankruptcy case. In a unanimous decision written by Justice Samuel Alito, the Court said federal law does not prohibit claims for such fees and that the 9th Circuit's rejection of Travelers' claim "finds no support in the Bankruptcy Code." Other federal appeals courts have said attorney fees are properly recoverable in such cases.Davis Polk Makes Rare Lateral Hire in Beijing
Davis Polk & Wardwell has completed the hire of O'Melveny & Myers Beijing head Howard Zhang in a rare lateral hire for the elite New York firm. M&A heavyweight Zhang joins Davis Polk as a partner April 7 in the Manhattan firm's Beijing office. Zhang, a former diplomat with the Chinese government, specializes in venture capital and private equity work. Vera M. Elson, one of the few Hispanic women IP trial lawyers in California, has been elevated to head of the intellectual property practice of the IP, Media & Technology Department in McDermott Will & Emery's Silicon Valley office. Elson, who has been with the 1,100-lawyer firm since 2001, will oversee 40 lawyers. Just weeks after announcing a London office, Heller Ehrman grabbed three heavyweight corporate lawyers from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr to bolster its new outpost. U.S. law firms have been answering the London calling for years. Now, Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner has done the same. The firm announced Wednesday that it will be opening a four-lawyer London office by year's end, marking its first foray into Europe.
