Coudert Files for Bankruptcy Protection
Once considered the nation's pre-eminent international law firm, the defunct Coudert Brothers has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In a petition filed Friday in Southern District of New York Bankruptcy Court, the firm, which broke up last year, said it lacked the funds to post appeal bonds to challenge two judgments against it, including a $2.5 million award in a legal malpractice suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.Jackson Lewis Opens Houston Office
Employment law firm Jackson Lewis has opened an office in Houston, manned by partner Joseph G. "Chip" Galagaza from Seyfarth Shaw. The Houston outpost is the 27th office nationwide for the 400-lawyer Jackson Lewis, which has had an office in Dallas since 1994. More lawyers will be added to the Houston office in the coming months, although managing partners have not specified a target head count yet.Sullivan & Cromwell Countersued by E-Discovery Vendor
Sullivan & Cromwell has taken its battle with Electronic Evidence Discovery to state Supreme Court in Manhattan while the Kirkland, Wa.-based e-discovery vendor has filed its own suit in state court in Seattle, claiming the New York law firm owes it almost $720,000 for services rendered plus interest. Sullivan & Cromwell first sued EED last month in the Southern District of New York, alleging the company had consistently missed deadlines and prepared the wrong documents for production to opposing counsel.Lawyer to Translate Japanese Needs for Smith Gambrell
William Herbert has joined Smith, Gambrell & Russell as counsel to develop Japanese business after a long sojourn in Japan. U.S. LLPs Might Have to Disclose Their Finances in London
U.S. law firms in London are on heightened alert this month ahead of a British government consultation that is expected to address whether U.S. limited liability partnerships operating in the city should be required to disclose their financial results. The Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform is set to release a consultation on the issue in the coming weeks. The controversial idea provoked fierce complaints from U.S. law firms the last time it was suggested in 2001.Thelen Reid Group Joins Winston & Strawn
Winston & Strawn has recruited an eight-lawyer group from Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner. The group is led by Michael Elkin, who had been vice chairman and litigation chief of the former Thelen Reid & Priest, which merged last December with Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner. Two other Thelen Reid litigation partners, Thomas P. Lane and Shari Markowitz Savitt, are also moving to Winston, as is corporate lawyer H. Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton may be arriving late to the China party, but the firm's leaders are optimistic that they'll quickly stake a claim. The firm announced last week that it opened its Shanghai office as expected. Magic Circle giant Clifford Chance has hired the director-general of the European Commission's legal service, giving the firm's clients unprecedented access to expert advice on European policy. Michel Petite joins Clifford Chance's Paris office this month and will advise on a wide range of policies, working closely with the firm's antitrust, trade, banking and taxation teams.
