Akin Gump Bumps Associate, Counsel Pay in Texas
Associates and counsel at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld's Texas offices are getting a raise. First-year associates will earn a base salary of $135,000, plus a $5,000 guaranteed bonus. Partner Daniel Micciche says Akin Gump will still award yearly merit-based bonuses, which range up to $50,000 and are based on more factors than other firms' "mechanical system based on billable hours." According to Fulbright & Jaworski's third annual survey of litigation trends, the average U.S. company faced 305 suits worldwide, and spent more than 70 percent of its overall legal budget on litigation. Thacher Proffitt Warns Associates of Looming Layoffs
Thacher Proffitt & Wood informed about 50 associates Tuesday that their futures at the firm were uncertain because of the collapse of the market for mortgage-backed securities, an area where the firm had had a leading practice. Among those impacted by the warning were 24 non-first-year associates who were told they were almost certain to be laid off in January unless the credit market substantially improved. Holland & Knight has endowed a scholarship for second-year students at Florida A&M University's law school that will cover full tuition and guarantee the recipient a summer associate position with the firm.
