On Oct. 27, 2021, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris set forth the country’s first National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality and committed to “promoting pay transparency, taking steps to increase analysis of pay gaps on the basis of gender, race, and other factors, and outlining plans to eliminate these disparities.”

The New York City Council may have heard the president’s announcement as a call to action because on Dec. 15, 2021, it passed a bill that amended New York City’s Human Rights Law (NYCHRL), making it an unlawful discriminatory practice for an employer with four or more employees to not include in job listings the minimum and maximum salary offered for any position located within New York City. As New York City Mayor Eric Adams did not veto it, on May 15, 2022, New York City’s pay transparency law will take effect.
