In a record-breaking deal, Equity Office Properties Trust has agreed to be bought by Blackstone, Real Estate Partners, an affiliate of The Blackstone Group for $36 billion. Also, Bank of New York Co. Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to merge with Mellon Financial Corp. at a value of $16.5 billion, creating the largest securities servicing and asset management firm.

International Paper Co., the Stamford, Conn.-based manufacturer of paper and packaging and one of the world's largest private landowners, has agreed to sell 5.1 million acres of forest land in a $6.1 billion deal to two separate investor groups, Resource Management Service LLC and TimberSTAR. Also, J.P. Morgan Chase and the Bank of New York announced their agreement to swap assets in a $4.45 billion deal, and Whirlpool and Maytag have agreed to a $2.7 billion merger.

The Sony Corp. has acquired the right to purchase from Michael Jackson another 25 percent of Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, a catalog including more than 200 songs by the Beatles, which is half-owned by Mr. Jackson and is worth approximately $1 billion. The deal is part of a $320 million refinancing that allows Mr. Jackson to avoid bankruptcy. Also, The Danaher Corp., a manufacturer of medical technology and environmental instruments, has purchased Sybron Dental Specialties Inc. for $2 billion.
