Shearman Eliminates General Counsel Post

Shearman & Sterling has eliminated the job of its full-time general counsel, John Shutkin, who was one of the few law firm GCs brought in from outside the law firm world, part of a wave of hirings of in-house lawyers at The Am Law 100. ABA Survey Finds Lawyers Among Lowest-Regarded U.S. Professions

Only 19 percent of Americans are "extremely" or "very" confident in lawyers and the legal profession, says an ABA survey released April 26. Survey participants saw lawyers as greedy, manipulative and corrupt and blamed the profession for failing to police itself. However, participants said the profession suffers from negative media portrayals -- and only the media, at 16 percent, were rated lower than lawyers.
