Dad Shares Death Benefit for Abandoned Son, a WTC Victim

Over a passionate dissent, an appellate panel gave half a Workers' Compensation death benefit to a man who abandoned his son in infancy and refused to financially or emotionally support him. The son, who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, was supported solely by his mother, but the panel held that the Workers' Compensation Law describes a parent in strictly biological terms, so the father is entitled to the same benefit afforded the mother.
