Research In Motion, the Canadian maker of the ubiquitous BlackBerry wireless device, agreed Wednesday to pay $450 million to NTP Inc. to settle what some call the most publicized patent-infringement suit in history. The case dealt with whether a part of a company's business operating in another country would be covered by U.S. patent law. The Federal Circuit said the BlackBerry was covered by U.S. law because "the beneficial use and function of the whole operable system assembly is in the United States."
