Conflict of Interest Case Against Reed Smith Moves Forward

A suit against Reed Smith alleging breach of fiduciary duty and conflict of interest will move forward now that a Philadelphia Commerce Court judge has denied, in part, the firm's motion to dismiss a former client's compensatory and punitive damages claims. In Axcan Scandipharm v. Reed Smith, a pharmaceutical company claimed that the law firm engaged in an impermissible conflict that led to Reed Smith's disclosure of confidential information to a second client.

Georgia Chief Justice Attempts to Cut Red Tape for Evacuee Lawyers

Georgia Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears is trying to make things easier for hurricane-displaced lawyers who want to start a practice in Georgia. She has asked her counterparts in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to change their rules so that lawyers from those states could get a State Bar of Georgia license in as little as eight weeks. Right now, such lawyers can practice in Georgia temporarily, but must pass the state bar exam to work in Georgia permanently -- a process that takes at least nine months.

A Manhattan judge has rejected a legal recruiter's attempt to collect a merger fee from Blank Rome, which rejected the recruiter's proposed combination with a small New York firm but later completed the deal with the help of a different search firm. The e-mail exchange between Mark Bruce International and Blank Rome did not constitute an enforceable contract because the parties had not agreed on the terms of a fee, Supreme Court Justice Herman Cahn ruled.
