Seeking a firm with strong oil and gas and Latin America practices, project finance lawyer George Humphrey joined Thompson & Knight as a partner in Houston, coming from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.
Humphrey, who helped launch Orrick's Houston office in January 2016, moved to Thompson & Knight on Monday.
He joined Orrick after 18 years at Andrews Kurth Kenyon, in part because of the firm's strong U.S. renewables practice, he said. Half of his work is in the renewables sector in the United States and Latin America, but he also does a lot of oil and gas work and Orrick's platform in that area isn't as broad-based, he said.
The Spanish-speaking lawyer said he began to consider a move as other Orrick lawyers with Latin America practices were leaving the Houston office. They included global M&A partners Rodrigo Dominguez and Bill Parish, who joined White & Case's Houston office in April, and Carlos Treistman, a corporate partner who moved to Greenberg Traurig's Houston office in February.
“When they left, the platform for me became not very helpful. That kind of pushed me to start talking to a lot of firms,” Humphrey said.
After talking to a number of national and international firms, Humphrey said Thompson & Knight was the best fit for his practice because of its prestige in the market and its “super-strong” energy capabilities. Another plus is its presence in Mexico, with offices in Monterrey and Mexico City.
“Another real attractive thing is all the Thompson & Knight lawyers I've ever run into have been good people,” he said, noting that some former Andrews Kurth colleagues are now at his new firm.
His clients include petrochemical construction and operating company Proman, and renewable companies EDF Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy.
According to a press release, Humphrey's recent projects include the refinancing of a Texas methanol project in 2018, and in 2017 he arranged a structure with Mexico utility CFE for providing U.S. natural gas.
Roger Aksamit, head of Thompson & Knight's Houston office, said in the release that Humphrey's focus on petrochemical and renewable energy project finance, with support from tax partner Louis Jenull, who joined the office in June, broadens the firm's practice offerings.
Orrick did not immediately respond to a request for a comment on Humphrey's departure.
