Pennsylvania Chief Justice Max Baer, who died in his Pittsburgh home the night of Sept. 30, led the state Supreme Court with a sense of collegiality that will set the tone of the court for years to come, said Baer’s colleagues and family.

Baer, 74, died of a heart attack in his sleep, according to his son Benjamin Baer, a lawyer with Saltz Mongeluzzi & Bendesky. Baer had been set to retire from the court in December, per the court’s mandatory retirement rule.
