Duane Morris continues to expand its West Coast footprint, adding a pair of intellectual property partners from Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie.
Terry Ahearn and Stuart Bartow, who most recently served as co-managing partners of Lewis Roca's Menlo Park office, joined Duane Morris' Palo Alto office as partners April 15.
“We were attracted to Duane Morris' strong IP practice,” Ahearn said. He added that he and Bartow had gotten to know Duane Morris' lawyers through their prior cases and connections and were attracted to the 660-lawyer firm's global platform.
Ahearn and Bartow reunited at Lewis Roca in 2017 as they moved over from McDermott Will & Emery and Paul Hastings, respectively. They had previously worked together at McDermott before Bartow left for Paul Hastings in 2015. Prior to that, they also crossed paths at Townsend and Townsend and Crew, where they were both associates in the early 2000s.
“We have been Silicon Valley IP lawyers our entire careers,” Ahearn said, noting that they have established rapport with contacts and clients from their previous experience. He added, “We plan on using our contacts to help [Silicon Valley office managing partner] Manita [Rawat] and Duane Morris grow the office.”
Ahearn represents clients in intellectual property and other complex commercial litigation related to high technology, as well as clients in data privacy and cybersecurity. Bartow, a patent litigator, also represents clients in intellectual property matters, with an emphasis on complex patent and trade secret disputes concerning high technology.
“We have complementary skills and have a good time working together. It just makes the practice more enjoyable,” said Bartow. Bartow, who has a technical background in computer engineering and neuroscience, said his skill set blends well with Ahearn's. Bartow called his partner “one of the most organized people” he has ever meet.
“We're excited to have Terry and Stuart join our practice in Silicon Valley,” Rawat said in a statement. “They are terrific additions to our firm and I look forward to working with Terry and Stuart to bring additional talented lawyers into our growing Silicon Valley office.”
With Ahearn and Bartow's addition, Duane Morris said it has a total of three partners and one special counsel in its Silicon Valley office.
Lewis Roca has not responded to a request for comment regarding the pair's departure.
