On the Move: Tracking the Ins and Outs of California Lawyers

Former assistant U.S. attorney Robyn K. Bacon is rejoining Munger, Tolles & Olson after her eight-year stint in the U.S. Attorney's Office. Bacon focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation, trials and investigations and will serve as partner in the firm's white-collar and investigations group. She is based in the firm's Los Angeles office.
Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel announced the election of several of its attorneys to partner, including patent litigator Hannah Lee in the firm's Silicon Valley office. Lee represents plaintiffs and defendants in high-stakes patent litigation disputes in the technology and life sciences industries.
Eight attorneys from Clyde & Co. are leading the newly launched Atheria Law, which is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in Los Angeles and Atlanta. The firm currently has 35 lawyers with backgrounds in insurance and reinsurance law, including in matters related to professional liability and technology, privacy and cyber.
Two San Francisco-based attorneys were among a group of nine environmental, health and safety crisis response lawyers to join Baker Botts as partner. Matthew R. Baker and Lily N. Chinn join from Katten Muchin Rosenman. Baker focuses his practice on civil and white-collar defense, and Chinn focuses her practice on civil and criminal environmental litigation.
Wendel Rosen brought on Patrick Tuck as an associate in its land use and litigation practice. Tuck joins the firm's Oakland office from Bertrand, Fox, Elliot, Osman & Wenzel. He handles matters related to California Environmental Quality Act compliance and litigation, water rights disputes, property acquisition and development, and property entitlement procedures.
A group of three Davis Wright Tremaine attorneys joined Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, with partner Jeffrey B. Coopersmith and associate Amanda McDowell joining the firm's Seattle office and of counsel Steve Cazares joining the firm's Los Angeles office. All three attorneys practice white-collar law.
Former Sidley Austin associate Eric Schmitt will lead the Chicago-based boutique The Quinlan Law Firm's new office in Menlo Park. The 10-lawyer firm also has an office in Phoenix. Shmitt focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation matters related to antitrust, breach of contract, business torts and bid protests as well as intellectual property disputes and other administrative law cases.
Los Angeles attorney Charles Weir left his role of head of McDermott Will & Emery's litigation group to take on a partner role at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips. At Manatt Phelps, he will handle health care litigation matters, specifically class actions, shareholder derivative suits, qui tam litigation and commercial disputes.

Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

Amy O. Bruchs and Kurt F. Ellison of Michael Best & Friedrich have entered appearances for Epic Systems Corp. in a pending employment discrimination lawsuit. The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
