Norton Rose partner joins Cleary to head up new Hong Kong law practice

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton is set to launch a Hong Kong law practice next year with the hire of Norton Rose's China corporate finance head. Freeman Chan will join Cleary to lead the new practice early next year, when the US firm intends to start practising local law. The practice will focus on Hong Kong-listed initial public offerings, capital market transactions, private equity and M&A.

Quartet of top Australian firms win roles on multibillion-dollar rail IPO

The airline is understood to be handing the main role on its planned listing to longstanding adviser Eversheds. Kaye Scholer has ramped up its London platform with the hire of Hogan Lovells securities head Katherine Mulhern and DLA Piper corporate partner Sean Scanlon, who will both join the firm as partners before the end of the month. Mulhern, a New York-qualified securities lawyer specialising in international equity and debt capital markets, joined Hogan Lovells in 2005 from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, following a secondment to the equity capital markets group of Merrill Lynch.

Linklaters and Jenner & Block have won roles as General Motors this week increased the number of shares on offer in its landmark initial public offering (IPO), reports The Am Law Daily. The car maker, which is being advised by US firm Jenner, has responded to strong market demand by expanding the IPO by 31%, helping the company to raise $23.1bn (£14.4bn) in what could be the largest IPO ever.

One of the big trends in capital markets over the past decade has been the increasing willingness of companies to list outside their home country. This affords them an opportunity to expand into other markets, bolster their international reputation, tap new investors and take advantage of higher valuations and liquidity. According to data published by Ernst & Young, cross-border deals accounted for 72% of the total funds raised on the top four exchanges - Hong Kong, London, New York Stock Exchange and National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ) - in 2009.

Ashurst hires Dewey ECM partner in Frankfurt

Ashurst has enhanced its European equity capital markets (ECM) team with the hire of a Dewey & LeBoeuf partner in Frankfurt. Matthias Von Oppen, who will join the firm next month (1 December), has spent three years as a corporate partner at the US firm's Frankfurt base. After qualifying at White & Case in Frankfurt in 1999, he was seconded to Swiss banking giant UBS, as well as the firm's London office. He made partner in 2004 and moved to Dewey in 2007.

As the managing partner of Chicago-based Trale Blaser & Stern, Boone had conducted hundreds of meetings in this room, but today was different. Private equity firm SilverKnight Partners had made an unprecedented $200m (£124m) investment in Trale Blaser the day before, transforming the law firm from a traditional partnership into a privately-held corporation with an equity value of $600m (£373m). Boone had just become the chief executive and in a few minutes would lead the inaugural board meeting.
