UK duo kick off Plymouth Argyle investment

Simmons & Simmons and Clarke Willmott have advised on Championship football team Plymouth Argyle's move to become the latest football club selling a stake to a foreign investor. The deal saw Simmons working with its Japanese joint venture partner TMI Associates advising the investor - Kabushiki Kaisha K&K Shonan Management - on its acquisition of a 20% stake in the club. The City firm fielded a team led by corporate partner Jason Daniel, with Ryo Ito leading at TMI.

Commentary: North/south divide dogs McGrigors City ambitions

At face value, last week's departures of Colin Gray and Colin McKay from McGrigors to Eversheds were unsurprising. After all, the firm has lost a number of partners in recent years and this, combined with the fact Gray finished his second term as managing partner in March and that McKay stood unsuccessfully as his successor, could be seen as a reasonable explanation. However, many of those who know the pair are more than a little surprised. As one former partner told Legal Week: "I was shocked - they were McGrigors through and through."

Kazakhmys hands Links new £1.4bn mining deal

Linklaters has advised regular client Kazakhmys as the mining giant moves to increase its stake in Eurasion Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC) to more than 25%. Kazakhmys, which is listed on the FTSE 100 and is a regular client of the City giant, has agreed to take on an extra 7.7% share in ENRC from the Government of Kazakhstan in a deal worth around £1.4bn.

CMS Cameron McKenna has landed a lead advisory role opposite magic circle firm Allen & Overy (A&O) on the proposed merger between United Business Media (UBM) and business data provider Informa - with the deal set to create a media giant with a combined value of more than £3bn. Camerons is understood to be acting on behalf of Informa, with corporate partner Gary Green thought to be leading the team.

Herbert Smith, Pinsent Masons and Barlow Lyde & Gilbert have all secured roles on a £22m case against a barrister, which is set to go to court later this month. The negligence claim, which is thought to be one of the largest cases ever pursued against a barrister, was brought against tax specialist Adrian Shipwright of Pump Court Tax Chambers and accountancy firm Baker Tilly by approximately 75 claimants.

Now that Tyco and Eversheds have taken their genuinely ground-breaking partnering deal to the next level, it is increasingly clear how much the two have riding on it being a success. But the key question, as much now as ever, is whether Eversheds can make the deal profitable. Given the details that Tyco has released regarding the relationship, it will certainly require the national giant to execute the work with efficiency and skillful project management on a scale and to an extent that is highly unusual in legal services.
