Sidley makes up one new City partner in 15-strong promotions round

Sidley Austin has handed 15 lawyers partnership in its annual promotion round, with one partner made up in the top 10 US law firm's City arm. Commercial litigator Steven Pitt is the only partner Sidley has promoted outside of the US, becoming the 41st partner in its UK office. The firm's UK practice was also recently expanded by the arrival of securities partner Bart Capeci from Allen & Overy.

Stephenson Harwood reappoints litigation partner to partnership council

Stephenson Harwood has handed litigation partner Roland Foord a second term on its partnership council, as the City firm gears up for elections for the senior partner role. Foord, who joined Stephenson Harwood in 1985 and leads the firm's professional services and art law teams, was re-elected to the four-member partnership council last month (30 November) and will serve another three-year term. He joins incumbent senior partner Andrew Sutch - who also chairs the group - shipping disputes partner Stuart Beadnall and shipping finance partner Nigel Porter on the council.

Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC) has bolstered its financial disputes practice with the hire of Reed Smith partner Tom Hibbert. Hibbert, who spent 10 years as a partner with the City office of Reed Smith and legacy firm Richards Butler, will head the financial disputes practice at RPC when he joins later this week (4 December). His position is a new role within RPC, with Hibbert set to lead a five-partner team dedicated to banking litigation.

Hammonds is considering pulling out of Munich in the wake of Eversheds' hire of most of the office's lawyers. Hammonds has been reviewing its Munich business since April and was expected to reach a final decision as Legal Week went to press. The firm stressed that if it decides to close the office altogether, the decision would be based on the review findings and not the recent departures.

Kirkland lands million-dollar payout after outsourcing dispute

A US judge has awarded Kirkland & Ellis and one other US firm $10m (£6m) in legal fees in a dispute over an outsourcing agreement, reports The Am Law Daily. The dispute stemmed from an outsourcing deal signed by tech company Metavante and Emigrant Savings Bank in 2004. Metavante had accused Emigrant of breaching the deal, before Emigrant filed counter-claims that eventually pushed the case into federal court.

Dubai finance centre aims to boost court standards with conduct code

The Dubai International Finance Centre (DIFC) Courts has introduced a professional conduct code, in a bid to improve the professional standards of lawyers conducting litigation before the courts. The code, which is binding for all registered practitioners appearing before the English-language common law court, was introduced earlier this month (1 November) following a consultation carried out in June this year.

Raft of UK firms advise as OFT loses out in Supreme Court overdraft charges dispute

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has lost its court battle to launch an investigation into the fairness of unauthorised overdraft charges. Five Justices of the Supreme Court, led by Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, ruled this morning (25 November) in favour of seven banks and one building society, ending the two-year case which was initially brought to the High Court in 2007.
