Norton Rose and Eversheds lead on £100bn offshore wind farm project

A raft of law firms including Norton Rose and Eversheds have secured roles advising on a landmark £100bn offshore wind farm project that could meet up to a quarter of the UK's electricity demand. The deal sees Norton Rose advising the Crown Estate as the owner of the seabed around the UK on which the wind turbines will be developed. The Crown Estate today (8 January) awarded licences to cover nine wind farm zones, which between them will deliver up to 25 gigawatts of power around the UK by 2020.

Skadden and Davis Polk lead on Exxon's $31bn natural gas buyout

Davis Polk & Wardwell and Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom have won lead roles on the biggest energy deal since 2006 - Exxon Mobil's acquisition of natural gas company XTO Energy for $31bn (£19bn). Davis Polk, which represented Exxon on its $80bn (£49bn) purchase of Mobil in 1999, reprised its role as lead M&A counsel, with a team led by M&A head George Bason, alongside corporate partners Louis Goldberg and Arthur Golden, tax partner Avishai Shachar, benefits partner Edmond FitzGerald and environmental partner Gail Flesher.

"A typical energy project is complex, unpredictable and chaotic," says Peter Roberts, general counsel of Centrica Energy, the upstream business of Centrica. "So attempting to tie a law firm to a fixed fee is an unintelligent way of proceeding." Still, Roberts expects any law firm advising on one of the oil and gas, wind or early phase nuclear power projects Centrica is currently developing to be able to at least provide a cost estimate - even if they end up straying from it: "It's like asking a cabbie how much he reckons it will cost to get to King's Cross," he says. "If he can't at least give you a rough estimate then there is a strong suggestion that he doesn't know what he is doing."
