DuPont names new general counsel Sager

DuPont has appointed a new general counsel following the retirement of Stacey Mobley. Mobley has stepped down from his post after 35 years with the company to be replaced by assistant general counsel Thomas Sager, who will take up the position from 1 July. Mobley has been general counsel for DuPont since 1999. Sager takes up the post after spending five years as associate counsel and chief litigation counsel.

K&L Gates hires Bear Stearns NY legal chief

Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis has moved to beef up its Manhattan financial services practice with the hire of the former managing director of Bear Stearns' legal arm in New York. Phillip Cedar joins the New York arm of K&L Gates as a partner from the legal department of the stricken investment bank, where he was in charge of a team of 20 lawyers. Cedar's practice focuses on securities and mortgage litigation and investigations.

In-house counsel have hit out at "unsustainable" rises in salaries for private practice lawyers, arguing that they will lead to an unwelcome increase in charge-out rates. Their fears come after Legal Week research last week revealed that three-quarters of partners at leading City firms said they think fees will increase over the coming year, with nearly a fifth claiming clients should prepare themselves for above-inflation rises.
