Linklaters has been named by electrical product supplier Electrocomponents as its main corporate adviser, beating a trio of top firms to win the coveted mandate. Linklaters saw off magic circle arch rival Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer plus competitors including Ashurst and Clifford Chance to bag the role in the company's first competitive review of outside counsel.

US GCs given bump up in pay

Total compensation for in-house lawyers in management roles jumped by 8% to 14% this year, and by 4.5% to 23% for non-management lawyers, according to a new survey by law firm consultancy Altman Weil, reports the National Law Journal. "These increases, even after adjusting them for inflation, were very solid," said Altman principal James Wilber.

BBC counsel switches back to old firm RPC

Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC) has boosted its media group with the hire of BBC in-house counsel Jaron Lewis. Lewis, who previously worked at RPC before switching to the BBC in 2000, will join the City firm as co-head of its media practice. He will work alongside incumbent head Liz Hartley, with whom he set up the firm's contentious media practice in 1997.

Japanese bank Nomura has named Mark Chapman as its new European general counsel. Chapman, previously of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, joined the bank's corporate legal department in 2000 and was most recently head of corporate litigation and company secretary. As private equity firms grow, broaden the scope of their investments and encounter more litigation, a rising number of them are hiring general counsel. Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co (KKR), one of the biggest private equity firms in the world, and GTCR Golder Rauner, one of the largest in Chicago, are both seeking first-time general counsel, according to people familiar with the executive searches. KKR and GTCR declined to comment.
