Bird & Bird has recruited two partners from Field Fisher Waterhouse's franchising team following the firm's hire of top-rated Field Fisher franchise lawyer Mark Abell. Victoria Hobbs, head of franchise dispute resolution at Field Fisher, has been a partner at the firm since 2008, after joining in 2000 as a franchise litigation assistant.

Latham & Watkins has turned to Norton Rose for its latest London partner hire, recruiting banking partner Dean Naumowicz for its City finance team. Naumowicz, who joined Norton Rose as a partner in 2006 from Barclays Capital, focuses on derivatives and structured finance. Roles he has taken on recent deals have included acting for project company Societa di Progetto Brebemi on a €2.3bn (£1.9bn) toll motorway project in Italy, on which he worked with a team of lawyers from the firm's Milan office.

Twitter Haiti earthquake photo ruling opens up worldwide intellectual property debate

There was an interesting decision in the US recently about the intellectual property (IP) implications of posting a photo on Twitter. Professional photographer Daniel Morel – a man who has apparently spent more than 25 years in Haiti – posted dramatic photos of the earthquake that struck the country in January 2010. Morel had posted his shots on TwitPic – a Twitter-affiliated photo sharing site – saying he had "exclusive earthquake photos". Although no copyright notice appeared on the photos, the name Morel did appear on TwitPic.

Hong Kong law firm Deacons has added to its corporate team with the hire of private equity partner Robert Woll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr (WilmerHale). Woll, who headed the US firm's Beijing office for six years, is a specialist in M&A and private equity transactions, and deals involving venture capital and real estate investment funds.

Bird & Bird plans further Asia-Pac expansion as firm eyes Indonesia and Korea

Bird & Bird is mulling ambitious plans for further expansion in Asia, with openings in Indonesia and South Korea on the cards alongside plans to ramp up its existing offering in Malaysia. The UK outfit, which has previously stated its aim to grow its Asia practice to account for 20% of firmwide revenues and lawyer headcount over the next three to five years, is reviewing opportunities for co-operation arrangements in Indonesia and South Korea, as well as planning to enhance its partnership with Tay & Partners in Malaysia ahead of market liberalisation in June.
