Field Fisher to launch two Germany bases with Howrey partner hires

Field Fisher Waterhouse is set to launch in Munich and Duesseldorf, following the hire of a four-partner team from Howrey led by German managing partner Joachim Feldges. Feldges will oversee all three of Field Fisher's German offices, including the firm's existing Hamburg base. He joins alongside fellow Howrey intellectual property (IP) partners Thomas Adam and Jochen Herr in Munich, as well as Duesseldorf-based Christoph Lenz.

Ashurst IP litigation team leaves firm for move to City boutique

Ashurst has closed down its intellectual property (IP) litigation practice following the departure of its sole partner Ian Starr. Starr will join IP boutique D Young & Co on 1 January alongside senior associate Tamsin Holman, who will become a partner at the firm. They will also be joined by junior associates Cam Gatta and Anna Reid and two secretaries. Prior to joining Ashurst in 1993, Starr had been a partner at Clifford Chance (CC) since 1984. His practice focuses on the protection, enforcement and licensing of IP and related technology rights.

DLA Piper has grown its intellectual property and technology (IPT) practice in Germany with the hire of a four-strong team from Taylor Wessing. Partners Jan Pohle and Benjamin Grzimek are set to join the firm's Cologne office along with associates Christian Kau and Markus Lang. Their start dates at DLA are yet to be confirmed. Pohle specialises in IT and telecommunications, while Grzimek focuses on contentious and non-contentious patent law.

Is Howrey's model broke or can global litigation deliver?

Does the global litigation law firm model work? This disturbing question has been explicitly raised this month by news of a 12-partner exodus from the European network of disputes and intellectual property (IP) specialist Howrey. Indeed, departing partners from Howrey, who are heavily concentrated in the firm's Amsterdam and Brussels offices, have made much of the problems of working within a US-based firm. The argument goes that the US' generally stricter conflicts rules are a real hurdle for litigators operating in Europe, particularly when the bulk of the practice is weighted stateside, which makes it inevitable that American clients will get the upper hand in a close call on conflicts.

Orrick recruits CC partner in trio of hires for London and Paris offices

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has added three new partners to its London and Paris offices with a trio of hires from Clifford Chance (CC), Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson and Fox Williams. CC banking and finance partner Richard Parolai has joined the US firm's Paris arm, Orrick Rambaud Martel, after 23 years at the magic circle firm, 15 of which he spent as a partner. Meanwhile, Fox Williams partner Kolvin Stone joined Orrick's City office last week in the intellectual property and technology transactions practice. He was made up to the partnership at Fox Williams last year and spent a total of eleven years at the firm.
