Linklaters and Dewey take cross-border roles on $1.34bn zinc mining deal

Linklaters and Dewey & LeBoeuf have taken lead roles on a $1.34bn (£907m) cross-border mining deal which is set to see Indian mining group Vedanta Resources become the world's largest zinc producer. The deal sees Vedanta purchase three zinc mines from rival conglomerate Anglo American, including the Skorpion mine in Namibia, Lisheen in Ireland and a 74% stake in Black Mountain in South Africa.

Herbert Smith and Latham & Watkins have taken roles on opposite sides of the £1.5bn sale of Harrods to the Qatari royal family. The deal sees Mohamed Al Fayed's 25-year tenure as owner of the iconic Knightsbridge department store come to an end, although he will remain in a new role as honorary chairman.

Orrick stalls Middle East and City merger deals amid tough markets

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe has put plans for strategic deals in the Middle East and London "on ice" as the US firm aims to gain a clearer sense of the economic prospects for Europe and the wider region. As Legal Week reported in February, the US west coast firm has been in talks with SJ Berwin regarding a merger. However, it has since emerged that Orrick had also held merger talks with United Arab Emirates firm Afridi & Angell as part of its other strategic priority of bolstering its Middle East practice.

Munday, who officially transferred to Moscow on 1 April, will work to develop CC's cross-border litigation and arbitration practice in Russia, while also continuing in his role of London head of litigation and dispute resolution. He has been dividing his time between the two offices since January.

Middle East energy giant Saudi Arabian Oil Co (Saudi Aramco) has handed its top legal role to long-serving lawyer David Kultgen, reports Corporate Counsel. The US-trained lawyer has been with Saudi Aramco, one of the world's largest oil companies, for 37 years, having joined the company from law school in 1973.

Latham & Watkins has officially launched in Saudi Arabia via an association with the Law Office of Mohammed Al-Sheikh in Riyadh. As previously reported by Legal Week, Al-Sheikh split from previous alliance firm White & Case earlier this year when Latham recruited a total of 13 partners from the US rival's London and Middle East practices.
