Baker Botts has hired former Lovells Middle East head Shibeer Ahmed in a boost for its Dubai project finance practice. Ahmed joined the US firm's Dubai office earlier this month - having left Lovells at the end of April. He had co-headed Lovells' Middle East practice alongside Rahail Ali since its 2007 launch.Ahmed's practice focuses on conventional banking and infrastructure and power project finance. He also specialises in Islamic finance, in particular project, structured and syndicated financings.

CC continues Asia push with HK partner transfer

Clifford Chance (CC) is relocating London private equity partner Simon Cooke to the firm's Hong Kong office. Cooke, who has been a partner at CC since 2006, advises on private equity and M&A and will work closely with Hong Kong corporate finance partner Andrew Whan. The move marks CC's third partner relocation in a month after the firm announced at the end of March that it was sending London partner duo Catherine Cook and Andrew Rolfe to Abu Dhabi, along with a team of associates.

Latham builds Abu Dhabi with partner from Dubai

Latham & Watkins has moved to shore up its Abu Dhabi base, relocating a partner from Dubai. Ken Schuhmacher becomes the first permanent partner in the emirate since the US firm rolled out its ambitious three-office launch in the Middle East last year. Until Schuhmacher's relocation last month, the office has been run by project finance counsel Mark Godfrey.Schuhmacher's relocation takes the number of lawyers in the office to three, with Latham set to increase this to six later this month through the relocation of two associates from London and one from the US.

Trowers cuts seven Middle East associates

Trowers & Hamlins has cut seven lawyers in the Middle East, with the bulk of the layoffs set to affect the firm's Dubai base. Five lawyers have been laid off in Dubai, while the firm's Saudi Arabia and Oman offices are also affected, with one lawyer cut in each of Trowers' bases in Riyadh and Muscat.All of the affected lawyers are associates in the firm's banking and finance department, which includes the project finance team.

Norton Rose City trio set for Middle East switch

Norton Rose is set to relocate three of its London partners to the Middle East in a significant boost to the firm's finance practice in the region. The firm's global head of Islamic finance, Neil D Miller, is set to transfer to the Dubai office, while corporate finance partner Alan Bainbridge and asset finance partner Emma Giddings will both move to Abu Dhabi. All three are expected to make the switch by the end of next month.

A raft of City firms have scored seats on Dubai Holding's new panel of preferred firms. Clyde & Co, Pinsent Masons, Eversheds and DLA Piper have all won spots on the panel. Clydes won its role on the back of its relationship with the investor and will advise on real estate, intellectual property, construction and corporate matters.All firms have a strong presence in the Middle East, with Clydes having opened in the region twenty years ago and Pinsents holding offices in Dubai. DLA Piper recently launched an office in Oman and Eversheds has offices in Abu Dhabi and Doha.

Freshfields Mid East corporate head returns to the City

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's Middle East corporate head Bruce Embley is set to relocate to London in May after spending the last three years in Dubai. Embley will take up a new role as chief co-ordinating partner for the Middle East in London, with David Higgins, who relocated to Dubai from London in November to co-lead the corporate group, taking the reins singlehandedly.Freshfields has four partners in Dubai and is intending to keep numbers stable by relocating another partner - yet to be named - this spring.
