Curtis to open Beijing office, eyes Asian expansion

New York firm Curtis Mallet-Prevost Colt & Mosle (Curtis) is to open a Beijing office in March this year, the firm's first base in East Asia. The 300-lawyer outfit, which currently has 15 offices globally, said the Beijing base will initially focus on international trade matters, with a view to launching new practices in the future. Located in the China Life tower in the Chaoyang district of the Chinese capital, it will be led by international trade partners William Barringer and Daniel Porter, alongside two senior associates and two trade analysts, three of whom are Chinese nationals.

HWL Ebsworth continues growth drive with five new lateral hires

Australia's HWL Ebsworth has recruited five new partners to bolster its insurance, commercial and banking practices domestically. The firm is understood to be on a growth drive, having also recruited three insurance partners and twenty lawyers from DLA Piper to join its Sydney office in November, as well as a workplace relations partner from Herbert Smith Freehills and a commercial property partner from Minter Ellison to join its Perth practice in September.

Japan's Nishimura and Asahi joins rivals in Shanghai

Japan's largest law firm, Nishimura and Asahi (N&A) has opened an office in Shanghai after receiving approval from the Ministry of Justice in China. The base, located in the Jingan District, will be staffed by two of the firm's Japanese lawyers, finance partner and Chinese business specialist Toshihiro Maeda, and counsel Takashi Nomura who focuses on Chinese IP and M&A work.

Bird & Bird has become the latest international law firm to enter Korea after signing a cooperation agreement with Seoul-based outfit Hwang Mok Park (HMP). The non-exclusive partnership will allow the two firms to participate in joint marketing and collaboration of client services, with a view to a more formal merger in the next two to three years.

Dechert eyeing Singapore launch with OMM hire - sources

Dechert is expected to launch in Singapore in the coming months after hiring O'Melveny & Myers (OMM) partner Dean Collins to run the new office, sources say. The US firm, which first revealed plans to open in the city-state last November, is understood to have voted on the new hire earlier this month. In a previous interview with Legal Week, former managing partner in Hong Kong and founder of the firm's Asia practice Basil Huang said the firm was looking to hire someone with an investment funds or disputes practice upon which it could build.

Clifford Chance, Orrick and Bredin Prat lead on Peugeot-Dongfeng deal

Clifford Chance, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe and Bredin Prat have taken lead roles on the latest deal between PSA Peugeot Citroen Group and its PRC commercial partner, Chinese motor company Dongfeng. The transaction, dubbed a rescue deal for the carmaker, will see Dongfeng and the French government each invest €800m into the company alongside a further €1.4bn from shareholders, totalling €3bn in capital increases.

Freshfields expands client relationship programme across international offices

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has expanded its client relationship management programme across its international offices after the scheme helped grow revenue from key clients by more than 15% a year. The CRM programme was introduced in 2011 by London managing partner Mark Rawlinson to increase the number of partners assigned to each key client. There are now about 50 key clients in the scheme in London, with two or three client partners assigned to each, instead of the usual one. The aim of the initiative is to build a long-term relationship with clients by increasing the number of practice groups they use and offering a client expertise in different markets. Freshfields says revenue from clients on the initiative has grown 15% year-on-year since the scheme kicked off three years ago.
