Milbank set for China management shakeup as senior partners exit

Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy has appointed new leadership in China as two of its longest-serving regional heads prepare to exit the firm. Anthony Root, the head of the US firm's Asian corporate practice and Greater China offices, will retire at the end of May, while securities partner Edward Sun, the chief representative of the firm's Beijing base, will leave before the end of the year.

Bird & Bird has appointed a former Virgin Atlantic counsel as a partner to head its aviation practice in Asia. Leo Fattorini is based in the UK firm's Singapore office, and is the first dedicated aviation partner in the region. While at Virgin, Fattorini oversaw all aircraft finance and leasing matters, and managed relationships with aircraft and engine manufacturers, lessors and overhaul suppliers.

UK magic circle firms Clifford Chance and Linklaters have advised on the CNY2.5bn (£262m) bond issuance of China Minmetals Corporation. The state-owned enterprise completed its sale of the three-year dim sum bonds at 3.65% at the end of last month, making it the fourth company to issue RMB bonds in Hong Kong since the rules regarding off-shore yuan bond issuance were changed last year.

When it comes to billing practices and service delivery, Asian general counsel (GC) rate their external law firms more highly than GCs in the West. Andrew Grech, the managing director of publicly listed Australian firm Slater & Gordon (S&G), has pledged to take full advantage of the UK's legal market reforms to make S&G's recently acquired UK arm the leading consumer law brand. S&G signalled its intention to break into the UK legal market in January 2012, when it announced its acquisition of UK personal injury specialists Russell Jones & Walker (RJW) for £53.8m.
