BLP gets go-ahead for Beijing launch this May

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has confirmed it will launch in Beijing this May, after being granted a licence by the Chinese authorities. The representative office, from which BLP will focus on real estate and infrastructure projects, will be headed by former BLP chairman Peter Robinson, who has been on secondment in Shanghai with key client Tesco for much of last year.

Links among just four firms to win Singapore licences after 23 apply

Linklaters, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, Jones Day and Sidley Austin have been awarded Qualifying Foreign Law Practice (QFLP) licences in Singapore as the Asian city state takes further steps to liberalise its legal market. The four international firms were among a list of 23 which applied for QFLPs in the period between 1 July to 31 August last year, with other hopefuls including UK outfits Berwin Leighton Paisner, DLA Piper, Ashurst, Olswang, Watson Farley & Williams and Stephenson Harwood, alongside American counterparts K&L Gates and Shearman & Sterling.

A&O and Allens lead on multibillion-dollar Vietnam energy project

Allen & Overy (A&O) and Allens have scored lead roles on a multibillion-dollar oil refinery project in Vietnam - touted as one of Asia's most important energy developments. The Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, Vietnam's second refinery, will be built on a 400 hectare site in Thanh Hoa province, south of Hanoi, and will process 200,000 barrels of oil per day in the first phase - approximately 40% of Vietnam's fuel requirements.

Alternative legal services provider Axiom is officially opening its new India base for business on Monday (18 February), with video game giant Electronic Arts (EA) on board as the office's first client. The formal launch comes after Legal Week revealed last August that Axiom was in the process of establishing a 5,500 sq ft base in Gurgaon to offer its clients a more cost-effective service in the region.

Norton Rose has appointed Australia chair Adrian Ahern as the new global chairman of the Norton Rose Group, as preparations for its June merger with Texas firm Fulbright & Jaworski gather pace. Ahern will succeed Norman Steinberg as head of the firm's global supervisory board, which currently includes 14 members across the group, in addition to Steinberg.
