Hope floats again for crucial IPO market as advisers dare to bet on HK revival

It's only the second week of January and already everyone is placing bets on the health of Hong Kong's initial public offering (IPO) market, still used by many local advisers as the bellwether of confidence in the region's economy. While the accountants are gearing up for a strong recovery, forecasting around 80 new listings valued at approximately HK$120bn (£9.5bn) during 2013, most lawyers are taking a characteristically cautious approach while hoping for the best.

Weil Gotshal & Manges has strengthened its M&A practice in Beijing with the recruitment of corporate partner Li Li from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton's local office. Li, who focuses on large transactions involving China-based corporates, joined Cleary in February 2011 from rival US firm Debevoise & Plimpton, where she played a key role in setting up the firm's Shanghai office. At Cleary she served as Beijing office director.

Allen & Overy (A&O) and Debevoise & Plimpton have advised on the sale of ING's Malaysian insurance operations to AIA Group. The deal, which completed last month after being announced in October, has seen AIA purchase the Dutch financial services company's life insurance and employee benefits businesses in Malaysia, as well as taking a 60% stake in ING's takaful Islamic insurance business, for a reported value of around $1.7bn (£1bn).

Ogier partner and British Virgin Islands (BVI) private client head Zac Lucas will join LG in Singapore in February next year.
