White & Case seals hire of Freehills mining chief for Hong Kong office

John Tivey, the lead partner in the mining practice at Freehills, is leaving the Australian firm to join White & Case in Hong Kong, reports The Asian Lawyer. Freehills has confirmed that Tivey has resigned and will be joining White & Case later in the year. In a statement, chief executive partner Gavin Bell called Tivey's departure "regrettable" but said the parting was amicable. He also stated that the firm's mining practice would remain strong.

Weil doubles Hong Kong office space ahead of planned expansion

Weil Gotshal & Manges is set to ramp up its Hong Kong presence as the firm moves to new premises in Hong Kong's business district. The move to Alexandra House, which will more than double the US firm's current office space, will allow it to accommodate all its current lawyers in Hong Kong as well provide capacity for expected future expansion.

Salans to pull plug on Beijing and refocus China efforts on Shanghai

Salans is set to close its five-person Beijing office, leaving the firm with a single base in mainland China in Shanghai. Partners voted to close the office late last month, nearly four years after the office opened in July 2008. Managing counsel Aiping Bao, the only full-time member of staff in Salans' Beijing base, is expected to relocate to Shanghai, taking total headcount in the office to 38. Salans is still in discussions with the four remaining support staff working in Beijing.

Top US firms saw China lawyer count grow 10% last year, research shows

China lawyer headcount at the top 250 US law firms rose by almost 10% last year, as the region continues to grow in importance for international law firms. The largest 250 US-based law firms by lawyer headcount - as compiled by The National Law Journal - added 194 lawyers to their China offices during the past year to reach a total of 2,249, while the total number of offices grew from 124 to 132.

DLA advises as Korean giant buys stake in major UK carbon capture project

DLA Piper has taken a lead role for Samsung C&T on its acquisition of a 15% stake in the Don Valley Power Project, one of Europe's biggest carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. The landmark project has seen 2Co Energy secure planning permission for the $4.8bn (£3bn) development of a coal gasification plant in Derbyshire that will generate 650MW of power and capture 90% of its entire CO2 output. Construction is expected to start in 2013.
